As Israelis living all across Europe, we cannot detach ourselves from our nation’s history, in some places, even for one day, whether it is a daily walk down the street where we come across a Stolpersetin, a walk in front of a Holocaust memorial monument or a conversation with friends where the topic comes up. Many Israelis around Europe are looking for different ways to commemorate the Holocaust and address the questions it raised for Israelis living abroad.
As Israelis living abroad, we might encounter antisemitism differently than how we would face or learn about it if we lived in Israel. Recognising this, we consider it vital to equip Israelis with the knowledge and tools to identify and combat antisemitism effectively. Therefore, our primary goal for the upcoming years is to provide sufficient knowledge about antisemitism, recognise its manifestations, and empower our community with the means to stand against it.
We see the combination of the two topics unseparated. As part of the guidelines and values of ICE, we take responsibility for the remembrance of the Holocaust in various ways from the beginning of our activity in 2017.
In 2023 the organization established the Holocaust Remembrance and Combating Antisemitism department. The department will engage in deepening the knowledge of Israelis about anti-Semitism in its many contemporary forms, will provide tools to deal with them and will initiate new projects and initiatives to combat anti-Semitism that will grow from the ground, by the Israeli community in Europe.
October 7, 2023, beyond being the day on which the “Black Sabbath” happened and the date that symbolizes the outbreak of the Iron Swords War in Israel, also marks the drastic increase in anti-Semitic events around the world. Following the alarming increase in anti-Semitic incidents, we see as of utmost importance the urgent need to increase our efforts to combat any type of anti-Semitism, hatred and discrimination against Israelis and Jews to ensure a safe and equal future for all.
In January 2024, we held the conference “Israelis in Europe combating antisemitism” for the first time. At the conference, Israelis living in Europe from 14 different countries sat together, who discussed the origins of anti-Semitism, what modern anti-Semitism is, the state of anti-Semitism in the world, and various workshops to obtain tools to deal with anti-Semitism. In addition, we held an innovation lab at the conference whose goal was to create a group of ambassadors for change and fight anti-Semitism through innovative projects that the participants will develop and promote. In collaboration with three other organizations, ICE selected six projects born out of the conference, which aim to combat anti-Semitism through education, dialogue and action, and are currently in development.
In July 2024, an Instagram page will be opened where we will provide relevant information to Israelis in Europe. On this page we will create content about anti-Semitism and how to deal with it, publish updates on the various projects we support, conduct interviews with leading experts on the subject and more. The Instagram page will be another tool for strengthening ties in the community and spreading important information in the fight against anti-Semitism.
We’re excited to introduce a new project in Sofia, Bulgaria, led by Mark Segal and Anna Levanovna Manoikyan. The project brings together Bulgarians, Israelis, and Bulgarian Jews to foster positive experiences, challenge stereotypes, and build lasting friendships in a welcoming setting.
The first event took place at a local bar in July. It featured discussions about Israel and Jewish history and live clarinet music by Ilia Godin. The atmosphere encouraged deep conversations and new connections.
In September, another event celebrated the Jewish High Holidays, offering participants the chance to learn about Jewish traditions in a warm, friendly atmosphere.
Mark and Anna will continue hosting events, creating opportunities for stronger ties between the communities.
We are excited to share the success of the “AI & ML Israeli High Tech and Innovation” event, a project from our innovation lab at the “Israelis in Europe Fighting Antisemitism #1 Conference.” The event, held in June 2024 during Vienna High Tech Week, aimed to address AI’s ethical challenges and highlight technology misuse. It showcased eight Israeli startups and featured expert Maya Sherman, who shared fascinating insights into AI’s impact on daily life and its link to antisemitism.
Special thanks to moderator Lirone Glickman and the incredible teamโSapir Ziman, Tova Starik, and Lee Baradโwhose hard work made this event possible. We look forward to sharing more projects soon as we continue to use innovation as a bridge for growth and mutual understanding.
